Understanding Anxiety

Anxiety is one of the most distressing feelings we can experience — and it’s very common. Some people feel anxious in certain situations, while others may experience it throughout the day.

What is Anxiety?

Anxiety is the nervousness or fear we feel before or during challenging situations. While occasional anxiety is normal, persistent anxiety can take different forms, such as:

  • Phobias – intense fear of specific situations or objects

  • Social anxiety – fear of social interactions or being judged

  • Panic disorder – sudden, intense episodes of fear

  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) – anxiety linked to past trauma

  • Health anxiety – excessive worry about your health

  • Generalised anxiety disorder (GAD) – ongoing, uncontrollable worry about everyday life

Why is Anxiety Therapy Important?

Long-term anxiety can lead to panic attacks, even when things seem normal on the surface. Understanding what triggers your anxiety is key to managing it. The causes can feel mysterious at first, but as you explore your anxiety, you’ll likely start to recognise patterns and triggers. Therapy provides a safe space to uncover these and develop effective coping strategies.
